Used Car Buying Guide: What to Inspect Before You Buy
A used car can be a great value — or a costly mistake — depending on its condition. Before you sign anything, here's what our technicians recommend checking, and why a professional pre-purchase inspection is worth every penny.
Review the Vehicle History Report
Services like Carfax or AutoCheck can reveal accident history, title issues (salvage, flood, etc.), odometer discrepancies, and service records. A clean history report is reassuring, but it doesn't replace a physical inspection — not all accidents get reported.
Inspect for Rust and Body Damage
Look underneath the vehicle and inside the wheel wells for rust, especially around the frame and suspension mounting points. Mismatched paint or uneven panel gaps can indicate prior accident repairs.
Check Fluids and Look for Leaks
Milky oil (suggesting a blown head gasket), burnt-smelling transmission fluid, or any fresh fluid spots under the car are red flags worth investigating further.
Test Drive on Varied Roads
Drive on highways, surface streets, and if possible a bumpy road. Listen for unusual noises, test the brakes firmly (in a safe area), and check that the transmission shifts smoothly through all gears.
Why a Pre-Purchase Inspection Matters
A $100–150 pre-purchase inspection (PPI) can save you thousands. Our technicians put the vehicle on a lift and check for things you simply can't see from the driver's seat — worn suspension components, brake life remaining, hidden rust, fluid leaks, and signs of prior accident repair.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
- Engine and transmission diagnostic scan for stored codes
- Brake pad/rotor measurement
- Suspension and steering component inspection
- Frame and undercarriage rust check
- Fluid leak inspection
- Tire condition and remaining tread life
- Battery and charging system test
